The Martindale Abrasion Tester is a
professional-grade laboratory instrument designed for testing
the abrasion resistance and pilling performance of textile
fabrics. This advanced 4-station testing machine allows
simultaneous testing of four samples, significantly improving

Ideal for woven, non-woven, and knitted fabrics including
apparel textiles, upholstery, industrial fabrics, and floor
coverings with pile depth less than 2mm. The machine performs

Step 1: Sample Preparation
Cut fabric samples using the 38mm or 140mm sample cutter
(depending on test type)
Ensure samples are free from wrinkles, defects, and edge effects
Condition samples in standard atmosphere (temperature 20±2°C,
humidity 65±4%) for minimum 24 hours
Step 2: Equipment Setup
Place machine on solid, level ground
Install standard felt (165mm diameter, 750±50g/m²) and wool pad
on grinding table
For abrasion test: Set three drive shaft blocks to Position #1
For pilling test: Set three drive shaft blocks to Position #2
For linear test: Set three drive shaft blocks to Position #3
Step 3: Sample Mounting
Place sample face-down on sample holder with standard foam
backing
Secure sample holder onto grinding table and insert center shaft
Ensure proper alignment and secure clamping
Step 4: Test Execution
Press SET button for 3 seconds to enter programming mode
Input required test cycles using control buttons
Press RUN to start the test
Machine will automatically stop when programmed cycles are
completed
Step 5: Evaluation
Remove tested samples carefully
Rate pilling performance using standard photographic rating
charts under specified lighting conditions
Record abrasion resistance data for analysis |
